The seats in vehicles have a cut-out area on the side of the seat towards the door. When the occupant is seated and the belt fastened, a post slides up and locks the two sections together. There might still be a rough sketch of the interior of the Caterwaul van (if I posted it) here that shows the seats.
Similarly, things such as sofas and couches are used for lying on, not sitting. Chairs and even bean-bag style seats are frequently used for sitting in dens (and stools are often used in kitchens and dining rooms).
