Yeah, I'll have to post a drawing of the design, since my explanation of it was sort of vague.

Both ideas have their strengths and weaknesses. I do agree that in a side collision Jim's concept could be too restrictive and potentially amputate the tail. On the other hand, Larry's idea has the weakness of creating a guillotine effect in the event of rollover or other crushing incident which would drive the seat back down on the tail. Jim's idea at least offers a little more strength there, but the opening needs to be configured differently.
Knowing Jim's art the way I do (I've followed him almost from the beginning, though I don't comment nearly as frequently), I'm aware that he knows the tail doesn't just stick out from the base of the spine--it literally extends the spine and as such would extend downward and back when seated, meaning the seat cushions themselves would need an extra hollow to permit relatively free movement. As such, you would have openings in both the seat cushion and the seat back itself for maximum comfort.
That said, most animals have the ability to tuck said tail pretty tightly beneath them by either swinging it to the side and along the thigh or, with short-tailed species especially, straight down 'between the cheeks' as it were. With that in mind, a simple hollow in the cushions to permit this placement would be safer yet, though would make longer, fluffier tails somewhat of an interference for the driver in particular.

Knowing my mechanical as well as I do I have to wonder of the medical injuries that may occur if that mechanism fails OR if the occupant is tossed about badly enough to yank their tail against or across that movable post as the damage could be considerable (Amputation or degloving of at least one side). A better design would be to simply curve the post/bar in a manner that would allow the tail to lay there with out being pinched. Couches & chairs could simply have a gap between the seat and the rear that would allow the tail to fall back behind them & that would solve that issue of pinched tails.

The seats in vehicles have a cut-out area on the side of the seat towards the door. When the occupant is seated and the belt fastened, a post slides up and locks the two sections together. There might still be a rough sketch of the interior of the Caterwaul van (if I posted it) here that shows the seats.
Similarly, things such as sofas and couches are used for lying on, not sitting. Chairs and even bean-bag style seats are frequently used for sitting in dens (and stools are often used in kitchens and dining rooms).

I got a question... If they have tails and such... What do the back of the seats look like? There cloths and uniforms have a hole for the tail properly, but how about chairs and seats like the ones in the car? Where do they put their tails? (look at the way your dog sits in the car for example) Makes me wonder… How bout you?

Description : A rough sketch of the somewhat beat-up car used by Leila Martin from Caterwaul (she's the wolverine). First thing I've drawn in months. VERY rough as a result.

Hey, beaters have their own special charm.
Especially if they have parts on the outside visible from other cars, like the door on Leila's car.
And don't forget the Bondo! <G>
