Actually...
If Christians followed the calendar and celebrated the Birth Of Christ
accurately, Christmas would be in spring.
It's in the Bible itself.
Remember the verse "When shepherds watched their flocks by night?"
Shepherds did this in spring, when the lambs were born, since the
primary predator of lambs were jackals.
In ancient Europe, there was a mid-winter celebration, had several names.
Such as the "Feast Of Mithras."
Early Christians adopted the old pagan holiday, and it became "Christmas."
In fact most of the Christmas traditions are adapted pagan traditions.
Including the tree.
As is, Christmas was a very minor holiday, the big one was Easter.
The Pilgrims and then the Puritans who emigrated to the New World
actually outlawed Christmas, because in the "old country," (England,)
Christmas at that time was a day to have off, and get really plowed.
The actual Christmas promoters were the post-Civil War merchants, they
wanted to sell the stuff they made.
No one is really discouraging even saying "Merry Christmas," this is a
ratings-boosting spiel from Fox news, mostly.
In fact if anyone looks up snopes.com, or many other debunking sites,
this "War On Christmas" turns out to be a big lie.
So to everyone here, Merry Christmas!
(And Jim, I love the drawing you did with one of the SW girls having
mistletoe tied to her tail, asking for a kiss.) :-D
