I can write a very short sci/fi about that possibility.
It's 2020. Interstate laws now allow people to drive on the Interstate at 70 MPH. Cab drivers are speeding around city streets throughout the country. Sidewalks are filled with pedestrians. All cars are now required to have something like Onstar as part of the standard safety feature package. Somebody hacks the Onstar network and gets it to tell every car in the system to deploy airbags; kill the engine and lock the steering wheel. Nation-wide 6000 people die in the resulting car accidents or as a result of getting hit by an out-of-control car. Who was responsible? Was it a terrorist attack? Did the Chinese do it? Was it the North Koreans? Or was it a high school kid with hacking skills who was having a bad day?
