I'm with you on that one, Mark. To show a society as more civilized is certainly more complex for a writer than to show one less civilized, though exceptions do apply.
As the person you're responding to mentioned DC and Marvel comics, Batman's "No Man's land" is an outstanding example of civilization as we know it out the window for the complexity of its writing, but foundations of that civilization, like the heroes not killing, still applied.

While I can understand the poster's viewpoint in getting a bit tired of the same heroes and villians fighting each other over and over again since the heroes are seemingly too "weak" to kill, beyond the fact that the publisher wants to keep these enjoyable characters alive for future readers to enjoy if they have not discovered them which is the real reason for the revolving door of battles and characters coming back from the dead if they are killed through some means, lets not focus on that forth wall.

To simply have heroes kill villains as some think they should, would in all reality "cheapen" the character. These are icons and legends who give us something to aspire to, a bigger picture than sometimes falls outside the realm of what we would consider as "logical behavior" at the time. Simply put, its too easy to simply say "Okay, there's someone making trouble here. Let me waste them and get rid of the problem." While this viewpoint can be entertained through characters such as the Punisher or Deadpool through either a humorous or deadpan writing style, again to say that a hero is weak for not taking this viewpoint is unfair. Two excellent examples of this would be in Batman's "Under The Red Hood" video (or the comic story line that inspired it) where The Red Hood Challenges Batman as to why he hasn't killed the Joker

In short, the reservation of one's full power is one's TRUE power.
