I'm not so sure that gene splicing would even be needed when the tech becomes available to design furries. Nature spend millions of years designing gene segments in each species to work together with other gene seqments to produce keyed to individual species. And why do it anyway when a computer could design the gene segments for an artistic concept furry to work together to produce that specific species? Do it that way and you have no problems. But when you mix species you get problems. The receptors for growth hormones and the growth hormones in different species aren't exactly the same. And sometimes they don't work well together. What you get might be infertile. It might just keep growing with nothing to check it's growth until biological problems cause it to die. Internal organs don't grow at the same rate. When you out-grow the size of your heart you die. It's better to build a complete dna system that is designed to support the species that you want to create. In short you create the code from scratch for it's purpose and it will work.
When you design species you don't have to make them exactly like the species you are designing them to look like. You can design them to be able to thrive on any diet you like regardless of that species they look like. Jim did something sort of like that with his world. His world is not earth. It's an alien planet. Alien planet; alien evolution. His skunks, cats, etc resemble only resemble ours. They aren't related to them. They are aliens.
If I were going to terraform a world I would bring no samples of life of any kind at all from earth to get thing started. I'd have robots build artificial dna for everything in the entire ecological system. Life would be created fresh in the lab. That would sane having to worry about keeping living samples alive during the voyage from earth to the target planet. Don't take it with you. Create it fresh when you get there. Why? Because you can customize soil bacteria, plants and everything else to fit the actual conditions of the planet. So your many furry species of people will have no problem living there. We were designed for our world. They will be designed for there world.
My imagination needs a rest. :)
