Pepe painted his stripe black at the end of 'Past Perfumance' after
discovering that the cat's stripe washed off. He also put on a costume
and pretended to be a dog in 'Scent-Imental Over You' when he found out
that the skunk he was persuing was actually a dog dressed in a skunk
costume. Maybe he does have a cross-species thing after all. =^.^=

Pepe was based on Charles Boyer and the character Pepe le Moke from the
movie Algiers. In fact in 'The Cats Bah' the door next to where Pepe
lives in the Casbah is marked Pepe le Moke (#15, Pepe's door being 15
1/2).

He really didn't look or act quite like he did later in Odor-Able
Kitty. When that cartoon was made the name Pepe hadn't been attached to
him yet and on the model sheets he is called 'stinky'. But most aspects
of the character were already there. Plus he had a wife and kits of
course.

There were also Pepe-ish looking skunks in earlier cartoons like Odor of
the Day and Fair and Worm-Er.
