Well, the easiest would be from the year of some dramatic event that
all the world could agree on as a basis. I don't know necesarily
what you'd use, but I can see that working as a basis [e.g. these
days, one could make an arguement for a new dating based on the first
controlled use of atomic energy or of the first lunar landing].
