Unfortunately, you've interpreted copyright law in a
way that most people do - and one that's wrong.
Technically, it's only legal if you're keeping it for
your own personal use and limited presentation - 'net
distribution is technically illegal. Now, there's a
lot of legal evidence that such material would be
determined to be fair-use if it was challenged, but
nobody has so far.
Anywho - there's also the fact that there's no
evidence that Yahoo is targetting just furry groups or
just adult groups or just copyrighted groups - Furry
Winamp Skins died, which cleared the last two easily,
and I believe several non-furry groups disappeared
too.
I have a feeling that it's more likely one of the
servers died, myself, and the data was lost.
