I dunno...I've heard bad stuff about BlackICE from people OTHER than Gibson.

But I agree, the guy is a total wacko.
Personally, I use SyGate...used to use ZoneAlarm until the latest version started screwing over my connection.

I can't reccomend anyone use that piece of junk. It's bacially a
half-assed firewall, that just doesn't do a decent job.
You're better off with almost any other firewall (Like Norton), or NIDS
(Like BlackICE)
I'm currently testing BlackICE, and from what I've seen thus far, I like
it. It's outgoing program control is basically useless, so I just disable
it and use Norton to handle that. Otherwise BlackICE is a great IDS. It
actually provides useful information when people portscan you.
Oh, and don't swallow any of Steve Gibson's crap. The man's an egomaniac,
a liar, and an over-all fraud Check out the "other" side of his
