I had heard they'd attempted to introduce a virus specifically targeted towards rabbits to reduce the problem but it backfired and spread to europe doing quite a bit of damage to the necessary rabbit population there while the lack of water had kept the virus from spreading through the rabbits they'd targeted. Sounds like some poor planning, much like when the forest service caused one of the largest forest fires ever in the US when trying to do controlled burning to prevent just such a thing, and screwed up everyway possible.

Fortunately we are not totally devoid of plant life, but we
are on Stage 1 water restrictions (no watering gardens with
sprinklers or using hoses to wash cars) and if it keeps
going, we really will be the big brown land before Easter
2003. There are cracks up to 3/4" (~20mm) wide in my lawn.

Rabbits really do give our native wildlife a hard time by
eating everything available. It is quite common in my part
of the country to see numerous rabbits sitting beside the
road coming on dusk and they are totally unafraid of cars
and humans. You can often get within 8 feet (~2m) of them
  before they run.

Australia definitely has a bunny problem.
