1789 actually, remember that the current US Constitution is
actually the second, the first[1] resulted in a government that
collapsed, bankrupt, shortly after creation.
The only thing that happened in 1776, WRT the creation of
American legal documents was that the Declaration of Independence
was written and signed by some of the signatories[3].
[1] AKA: The Articles of Confederation, adopted in 1781.[4]
[3] Only one actually signed on July 4th 1776.
[4] Legally, the US didn't exist until 1783, when the Treaty of
Paris(1783) was signed.
