The 110 VAC line varies by quite alot all day long, the UPS switchover
should not be seen as anything different.
The PC switcher powersupply has enough capacitence to keep running for
more than long enough to prevent any VDC dips.
I know of no UPS that opperates poorly enough to even be noticed.
Of course, dont forget the reason the UPS is there, the VAC line is
going down and VDC supplies are going to fail. This will cause drops
that can damage the HD and other parts. So even if it has a slight
chance of a problem isnt that better than a guareneteed one?
If you have some examples of combinations you know fail I would like to
know of them. A poor UPS and a underrated powersupply could fail.

I have never had a single computer damaged by storms, I never shut down
in them even when on modems.
I use UPS with phone and LAN protection built in.
I use a Belkin 650 gold with conection to my computer to handle
automatic shutdowns in case the power is gone to long.
It logs to file info about line quality and will graph it etc. Thats
useful if the power company feeds you junk power.
The software talks and will tell you if power is lost, if load limits
are approached etc.
The UPS powers my 21" monitor, P4 3.2Ghz computer, Cablemodem, Network
router and printer.
I think it cost me $150 or less and should be cheaper now.
On a side note, you are suppost to replace the batteries every 3 years
but I never have. Their capacity drops over time, but the Belkin
autoshutdown calculates based on capacity remaining so will work fine in
general. Of course a battery failure will need a replacement.

I hope this helps.
