I had a similar encounter. Once I was sitting in the grass in the
moonlight and a skunk wandered within about a foot of my leg. It
didn't notice me at all until it was a few feet away and then just kind
of sniffed around and looked in my direction and ambled off.
Supposedly they don't see very well and I wasn't moving so I guess the
critter just didn't notice me until it got within sniffing distance.
