I'm not trying to defend piracy, I'm an advocate against the abuse of
law, it's fallacious and reprehensible to try and declare "x amount"
of losses and try to find somebody to take that from.
Many people share and copy, I really mean a huge numner of them, if so
many people are defined as criminals for what is quintessentially
going to be human nature, then obviously there is something wrong with
the law, or the people interpereting it for their own greedy ends.
The attitude of person that would themselves like to sue or forcefully
take from their fans is not a very smart one, and in the case of most
RIAA represented artists, the artists are usually against it.
There is no hard and fast solution, you have basically two types of
full time artists, one who just wants lots of money, and the other who
needs to somehow make an income while creating their art full time for
people to enjoy.
Being sue-happy and hell bent on spending time and effort to try and
change a situation and get compensation for something you've partially
caused is a bit dumb, you have to take into you account, people will
share and copy for different reasons, - some of those may be
accidental from people who haven't heard of that artist before, may
find them popping up in an online image search etc.
The solution to creating a sustainable income from your art, is to
obviously adapt to your specific and unique situation, also to
understand the demographic of the majority of your fanbase.
It's not easy, if you plan on trying to do everything alone, it's
probably one of the most difficult things an artist can do, obviously
you need then to put in the effort for your own sake, and not make
excuses when things go wrong, or you get more people copying your work
than paying for it - this is an error on your part, if the majority of
your demographic happens to be tech savvy teenagers who hoarde
everything they can find on the internet, then you either should have
taken this into consideration, or learn from your mistake.
I don't know what any specific solution would be, but the onus is on
the artist to come up with something creative or unique, or effective,
not to have a whine and cry that life isn't fair.
