I just really want to help her out, since we're still good
friends and I really want to see her art go somewhere. Do
you take portfolios of artists for background work and
stuff, or do you have the number of someone she could take
her portfolio to?
Sadly, professional "background" artists (assistants, etc) have to live in
the same area as the artists they are assisting, otherwise it doesn't work, and
you have to find an artist (or studio) that is busy and successful enough to
NEED an assistant. There isn't any "big publisher" of furry comics, it's a
niche genre, and will always be a niche genre. Drawing comics is a calling:
artists draw it because they can't imagine NOT drawing it. There's no money
in it (other than for a small handful of "superstar" superhero artists), so
don't encourage her to draw to get rich, encourage her to draw to be
creative, to give something to the world and say "I made this". Open a gallery at
deviantart or furaffinity (dependant on what she draws) and post artwork to get
feedback on what people connect with or what they don't care about. It may
be better to remain a "fan" artist where she draws what she wants, because
most professional artists are in careers such as graphic designers or
storyboard/advertising artists, where they get told exactly what to draw, and then how
wrong it is and to start over again. Encourage her to take any free or
low-cost art classes at colleges or museums that she can come across. Look
around for life/figure drawing classes, or just go out to a zoo and draw the
animals. Most artists will tell you to not look for a career in artwork, so she
has to decide "Well, I want to draw artwork ANYWAY" to have any hope to
succeed in it. The most important part is to DRAW. Anything! From that point,
put your work out for the world to see, and see if they ask for more. I wish
her luck, I would love to have the talent to be an artist, but I'm just an art
devotee.
