The big thing to remember is that there is a reason why guns are shaped the
way they are and that there aren't really any better forms to choose from.

The only thing where a possible weapon is going to be different is that a
laser can have its 'barrel' folded in order to shorten its length without
significant performance loss.

For military weapons developed at a modern/near future tech level I suggest:

Rifles should tend to use the bullpup layout, with the breach and feed behind
the trigger.

Consider having some military weapons use caseless ammunition, (i.e. no
brass), especially if they use ammunition that is incompatible with civilian
weapons.

Remember that energy weapons can 'cheat' and get both a more convenient clip
placement of a conventional layout, and the extra barrel length of a bullpup.
