Energy weapons can also integrate the clip/power cells into another part
of the weapon, like the buttstock. Note that rifles do still need a
stock if they expect any kind of accuracy beyond pistol range, even if
they have no recoil. Even a pistol needs length in order to incorporate
iron sights to hit anything past point blank, but a light pistol
intended for short range fire from the hip (like a derringer) or using a
reflex sight (or some high-tech holographic sight) could theoretically
mount the battery and laser tube side by side in the grip, with a small
finger guard and emitter on top. It would necessarily be less powerful
and have a smaller "clip size" than a standard gun-shaped pistol,
though, so this sort of thing would probably be limited to
easily-concealed self-defense weapons or assassination tools.
