No, they did. Wars were constantly being fought over religious beliefs, and after awhile the governing bodies had had enough. About 2,000 years ago, all religions were pretty much knocked down from their high horses. Over many, many years, technology and science grew stronger and made further advances, wars became very infrequent, and society as a whole began to grow.

There are still religious beliefs, mind you. The basic purpose of it is to try to explain the very beginning of their world. Why are their some species that exist as both 2-legged AND 4-legged, while others are only 4-legged? Because of various similarities, even across species lines, many folks wonder what sort of creature, or event, occurred which spurred on their evolution. Whatever sort of being (god, alien, or mutation) it was, it obviously walked upright on 2 legs, had 2 eyes, was capable of advanced reasoning and thought, and so on. But no one knows who, or what, such a creature may have been. And so they fall back upon their religions to explain the things their science cannot yet explain.
