That's pretty much it. Humans were evolving at the same time as the different species, but soon discovered they were neither fast enough, strong enough, nor dangerous enough to defeat the various predatory species on this version of Earth. Sure, humans have intelligence, but we have to rely upon weapons and external devices for protection, since we have no claws, fangs, or anything like that. Now imagine critters WITH claws and fangs, who also happen to be capable of wielding weapons just like we do. They're also capable of complex thought, reasoning and deduction. They can set traps. They're faster and stronger than humans.

It's no wonder early mankind went extinct. (Likewise, there are also no monkeys, gorillas or other primates left on their world either. Fossils have been unearthed, but no living examples are alive in modern times.)
