I got hit by almost the exact same symptoms when the virus first came out and my guess is that it either hid in your machine as a 'time bomb' or came in through an email or website you visited. Of course, it may also have just been a corruption of Windows itself over time, but I find that the least likely of all the help you were offered.

We're seeing something polymorphic in the works lately that is causing a
mess and not a single one of the served droppers is being detected by
anybody at all. Always make sure your updates are 100% up to date for
Windows, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player, and Java, as well as whatever
browser you use, as that will help. Beyond that, just cross your
fingers and pray

Over time, it simply gets too cluttered with unused registry items that start interfering with active ones along with other files a registry cleaner never sees.

Can't do that with Win7... Activation limits. :( Even the 10 Win7
Ultimate Keys with the MSDN sub have a limit of 10 activations each for
example. I've seen a VM kill a key by somebody forgetting to activate
it -BEFORE- saving the initial state.

"I'll just keep using XP forever then!" Just like people are having
great luck with Win 95 right now. ;) XP is going end of life far too
soon for my comfort, but I do like Win7, which is a shocker to some people.
