With that fix, Jim, it tells me my 'virus' analysis was likely closer than anyone else's guesses. I got hit by almost the exact same symptoms when the virus first came out and my guess is that it either hid in your machine as a 'time bomb' or came in through an email or website you visited. Of course, it may also have just been a corruption of Windows itself over time, but I find that the least likely of all the help you were offered.
One thing I do remember an MSCE ones told me. If you use your computer a lot, you should reinstall it at least once a year simply to keep it running smoothly; twice a year is better. Over time, it simply gets too cluttered with unused registry items that start interfering with active ones along with other files a registry cleaner never sees.

I was able to reinstall the network card and had to find a back way to put the network key into the system to get back on the wireless network. Actually surprised myself with that one. Reinstalled the new scanner and the software, as well as Photoshop and some extra fonts. Seems a bunch of drivers were not included with the OS reinstall, so I had to track down the motherboard info and find the appropriate drivers. I've got those fixed now, and can once again enjoy SOUND.
