As Andrew pointed out, there are animals which are 'more anthro', or that we anthropomorphise. This will probably start with things like 'intelligent pets'; they'll be cuter, easier to look after, smarter, safer, as they'll effectively be a created 'toy'. Inevitably, someone will play around and where there is a perceived market, someone will want to exploint it. Cyborgs could also be a highly probable mid-step.

Have you seen the Whiskas cat food purple cat?

For the animation and discussion of this cat see:
http://www.theenthusiast.com.au/archives/2009/review-whiskas-purple-cat/

This is a hyper-cute cat, that in the animations shows all 'more desireable' attributes than real cats. I'm not going to try and justify how they'll get it to market or be accepted, but being 'more desireable' and 'safer' (as they are programmed creation) will make it appealing to "helicopter parents" and everyone else out there who doesn't want to have to "take the good with the bad".

We may not be as far advanced as we may like to think we will in the next 50 years, but let's go back even 30 years and look where computing has come, along with medical and technological developments. Roughly twice that far away (still in most of our lifetimes) in the future, we could see some pretty incredible stuff if things continue even at their current rate of development.

Scrapper, Black Dragon, not surprised, though often disappointed by what society will tolerate.

PS - the subject line is for what the email is about - it may contain a question, but a question about what??? S,BD.

One thing Science Fiction has taught us is that yeste-ryears fantasies become today's realities. It is possible that in the future we'll see designer pets, not specialty bred pets, but humanoid animals created by genetic corporations catering to the whims of the ultra rich. Possibly governments will use anthro soldiers on the battle fields as robots can have their signals jammed, be hacked, or shut down with emps. Then there is the Space Industry to think about. What's a couple million more to have anthronauts doing the risky stuff in space, keeping the Human population safe on the ground.
