I'm an old fox that finally realized he was a fur back in 1982 after reading a Sports Afield article entitled "Woodland Wizards". I'd always enjoyed reading stories and novels about wolves, dogs and yes, even cats of all sizes (really enjoyed Born Free, the book). Even younger, my parents had given me a book entitled "The Adventures of Reddy the Fox". So I'd been an unrealized fur since I was a child. As I grew older--before reading that Sports Afield article--I'd come to realize the fox is my totem and the one creature I relate most with.
Once the internet really got rolling, I realized that there were other people with a similar relationship with their totem animal and eventually found FurryMuck. The rest goes from there.
I left out a lot of detail because I could easily write a long biography of the different things I discovered as I grew into my comfort with being a fur (as compared to the more stereotypical 'furry'). Let me say that I got to the point that I could convince people quite readily that I was a true melding of human and animal characteristics in chat rooms, which appealed to some and upset others.
