We had the same system out here in Western Canada. There are a multitude of reasons they retired the Electric Transit System up here. Winter, age of the line (plus cost of upkeep), age of the busses (the system was put in back in the early 70's), availabilities of parts (once again, it was old tech and they were buying parts from junkers down in Mexico), power outages always casue a fun time with traffic, etc. The Light Rail Transit (or LRT) is still run on the electrical grid rather then using diesel or gas (though once again, power outages are a problem). Cheers

some of the stuff you guys have been mentioning reminds me of something we used to have here in Nova Scotia.
We used to have electric transit buses in the city of Halifax and I believe the city of Toronto.
not sure when they took them out of service. They ran on a electric cable, which extended from the top of the bus, which look like any other Street bus however the cable on the roof would attach to overhead lines , which provided the bus with electricity. Basically, the unit from time to time would fall off the rails overhead and had to be put back on with a broom handle like device operated by the driver of the bus. There were always problems with the lines breaking as well. I don't remember what year they get away with the system in Canada.
It was mentioned a few times in history class I just forget what year they said the system was taken out of service.
