Yes, it is a sad thing that so many projects don't get finished. I've still the huge Skunkworks fan-fic I started years ago - clocked around 50,000 words, but alas I too have not finished it and haven't found time to polish it to a level that I feel can be released on the public.

As you say, (and I've said with my writing tips), if you don't need a character, don't introduce them. It annoys people if they are expecting a story featuring a specific popular character and you only give them a cameo. Better to stick with your core characters. But Jim never minded people writing stories about his characters, unless they were trying to pass them off as his. People are welcome to write fan-fiction with JMH's characters, but please make sure that he is credited where appropriate.
