Don't throw that hard drive away yet! It may be possible to use recovery software to retrieve that data, even if the home sector is destroyed. In fact, once you recover the data, you may be able to reformat the drive and resume use, but that depends on whether or not there's any physical damage from your accident.

Don't give up on your library. See if you can't recover it first.
