Yeah, Des could have been made up entirely to start with, or based on a real person who later withdrew from the fandom. And Des seems like one of those tools to allow Jim to explore different subjects without needing or wanting to draw attention to himself. It seems sneaky but it's not.
Unfortunately, Aliases can be a double edge sword in creating art. When the primary artist dies all the artwork by the primary artist and aliases end as well. Which can leave a big hole in the art community; Like a house of cards no one knew existed collapsing in on itself.
For example, a web artist called Albert Temple, alias Gene Catlow, passed away in early March of this year, and when he did an artist called Richard Katellis "who" drew the web comic Kit 'n' Kay Boodle also disappeared. (No more yiffing in Yiffburg. Boinkberries are all gone.)
However, there's suppose to be a photo of Katellis and his girlfriend, but the photo just may have been a dodge used by Temple to throw people off the track that Temple was also Richard Katellis.
At least five other web artist also vanished when Temple died, including Temple's and Katellis' girlfriends. (Apparently, Temple had a room full of computers which represented each person, as a tight knit group on Fur Affinity and other web sites.) Inkbunny site also saw a number of artist who stop updating the same time Albert Temple died. If the information is accurate Albert was one busy and creative artist.
Sad too. I really liked some of those comics. Gonna miss Kit and Kay.
Aliases, useful, but dangerous for viewers who follow artist creations. And ya can do nuthin about it. Bummer.
